FAWEN LAGOS CHAPTER CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD
On Thursday, October 17, 2024, The Forum for African Women Educationalists Nigeria (FAWEN) Lagos Chapter, celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child in Lagos highlighting the opportunities and challenges that girls encounter..
Present at the event held at Command Day Secondary School (CDSS), Ikeja Military Cantonment, Lagos, were educators, healthcare professionals, and activists who shared insights and highlighted the need for the girls to dream big and overcome societal hurdles. Among the audience were but not limited to Major General B.A Tsoho (Ph.D), Corps Commander Education, Nigerian Army; Lt. Col O.D. Bamiteko, Acting Director Division Education Service, 81 Division Nigerian Army; Lt. Col. S.O Omoyeni, Commandant, Command Day Secondary School (CDSS) Ikeja; Lt. Col V. A Ekubo, Commandant, Command Day Secondary School (CDSS), Bonny Cantonment, Victoria Island; Mrs. Bavoshia Beryo, Representing, Chairperson 81 Division, NAOWA, Mrs Zainab Farouq Mijinyawa Mother of the Day; The Very Reverend Yinka Olatunbosun, Guest Speaker; Mrs. O. Efenudu, Zonal Director Lagos Ministry of Defence, Education Services Department; Mrs. Adejumobi O. K. Assistant Vice Principal Administration Senior School, CDSS Ikeja; Mr. Abdullah M. M. , Vice Principal Administration CDSS Ikeja; Mrs Immanuel V.N; Vice Principal Command Day Secondary School Oshodi; Members of FAWEN, Lagos Chapter.
The Guest Speaker, The Very Rev. Yinka Olatunbosun speaking on the year's theme: “Girls' Vision for the Future”, reminded the students that education is still their greatest asset, thus there is need for them to focus on their studies. Below are highlights from her speech:
“Education is your greatest asset. It opens doors to opportunities that can change your life".
"Consider careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), areas where female representation is still lacking" “Don’t shy away from Mathematics and sciences; embrace them as technology evolves rapidly, your contributions are vital"
“Feeling overwhelmed at times is normal. What’s crucial is recognizing when you need support and seeking help."
While celebrating girls’ achievements, she also addressed the societal obstacles that often impede their progress. Issues like gender-based violence, early marriage, and limited access to healthcare were identified as major barriers.
“It’s important for you to be aware of these issues and understand your rights. Know that you are not alone, and there are resources and support systems available to help you,” she added.
In her speech, Dr. Ruth Lawal, the Coordinator of FAWEN Lagos chapter, addressed the pressures young girls are facing, including academic stress and societal expectations, as well as the effects of social media. She told the girls : “Your mental health is just as important as your academic success. Don’t hesitate to discuss your feelings and experiences.”
The Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee, Dr. Olukemi Oyetubo, also in her own contribution, stressed that the potentials of the girls are limitless and advised the students not to let anyone define their capabilities based on their gender.
She also encouraged the girls to form study groups and participate in extracurricular activities emphasizing that “Collaboration and mutual support can lead to personal growth and academic success.”
In his speech, Lt. Col S.O Omoyeni, Commandant, CDSS Ikeja mentioned that the school is making efforts to make sure that their students have the best upbringing without discrimination.
Mrs. Bavoshia Beryo, Representing, Chairperson 81 Division, NAOWA, Mrs. Zainab Farouq Mijinyawa, Mother of the Day emphasized that at NAOWA Schools, girls are empowered and encouraged by giving awards on best performances.
Among the participating schools, CDSS Ikeja recited words of affirmation while CDSS Bonny Cantonment and CDSS Oshodi acted dramas promoting empowerment of the girl child.
Dr. Marian Akran, the Anchor added flavour to the event by introducing different exercise patterns in order to keep the event warm and lively.
